Goa Gajah Temple

Goa Gajah Temple is one of the oldest rows of temples on Bali Island. Not only that, but Goa Gajah Temple is also worthy to be called as one of the temples with the most phenomenal design on the Island of the Gods. Goa Gajah Ubud also has a high historical value in Bali.

Goa Gajah Ubud is located in the west of Bedulu Village, Blahbatuh District, Gianyar Regency. The exact location is on the edge of a cliff and is a unite of the small river in the village. If you depart from Denpasar, the distance is about 26 km from Denpasar with an estimated time of 1 hour.

From the parking area to the hermitage, tourists must descend the stairs. This place is surrounded by the lush green trees, so the atmosphere is very cool and beautiful. According to officials who guard these attractions, the trees are hundreds of years old. Goa Gajah Ubud is the tourist attraction complex which you can see the whole area only from the stairs. When you reach the lower area after descending the stairs, the sound of water flowing from the fountain shall be heard. Former stone buildings that were destroyed by the earthquake were also found around the shower. While Goa Gajah spot is located not far from the fountain statues.

The Goa Gajah comes from two words "Elephant Lwa". In the Negarakertagama ejection prepared by Mpu Prapanca in 1365 AD, there is the name "Lwa Gajah". If interpreted, into Indonesian, the word "Lwa" means river and elephant, which means a place of worship for Buddhist monks. Then the name "Lwa Gajah" can be interpreted as a hermitage of Buddhist monks whose location is on the river bank.

Goa Gajah Temple does have a unique shape and is very much different when compared to other temples on the island of Bali. As the name implies, this Goa Gajah Temple has the shape of a cave. Because of its uniqueness, UNESCO also included Goa Gajah as one of the tentative lists of world heritage sites that must be protected.

With its unique architecture, it's no wonder that the Goa Gajah Temple has become a destination that has succeeded in attracting the attention of many tourists. The visitors can explore the temple complex which consists of two main areas. The first area is located in the north which is the location of the existence of Shiva's heritage. This is evidenced by the existence of Ganesha and Trilingga statues. This area is also a place of worship for Hindus on Bali Island.
